In June 2012 the Copenhagen City Council passes the Copenhagen Climate Plan 2025, which is renewing the existing plan from 2009. The Climate Plan outlines a large number of ambitious environmental initiatives which are to help Copenhagen achieve the vision of becoming a carbon neutral city by 2025.

The City of Copenhagen is always searching for joint initiatives from municipalities, the business world and the citizens as well as close cooperation across international borders. On a European level, the City is partner of five projects aimed at establishing a European infrastructure for EVs. On a global level, the City is engaged in the Clinton Climate Initiative and C40 facilitated network on EVs.

  • 1. GREEN ENERGY

    Twenty-two percent of Denmark's total electrical consumption is produced from wind turbines, the highest rate in the world. As part of the coming Climate Plan, a city owned utility company plans to erect more than 100 new windmills before 2025. It will give Copenhageners, businesses and the City of Copenhagen the opportunity to buy green electricity for their EVs. By storing surplus electricity in electrical car batteries it will be possible to store greater amounts of renewable energy. This will help Denmark to secure a flexible national energy system.

    2. MUNICIPAL EVs and HYDROGEN CARS

    Since January 2011, all passenger cars bought by the City are either electric or hydrogen cars. Moreover, since 2009 11 battery electric busses have been in service in the city, and more are to be introduced in the near future. Before 2015, 85% of the City's passenger car fleet will run on electricity or hydrogen, which in total will amount to about 500 new vehicles. The total reduction in CO2 emission will be approximately 1,000 ton annually.

    3. INFRASTRUCTURE FOR EVs IN COPENAHGEN

    The City of Copenhagen has since 2009 collaborated with external partners to establish an infrastructure for EVs on public land. The City requires all EVs to have free and equal access to the charging points. To encourage Copenhageners to drive EVs 500 parking spaces around the city are earmarked for charging points. At the current rate, all 500 spaces will be established by early 2013.
